On April 4, 2025, Fuyo Kaiun conducted a ship-shore emergency exercise outside normal office hours, involving the management vessel MV Federal Masamune.
The scenario simulated a crew fatality due to cardiac arrest while the vessel was transiting the East Coast of Taiwan. Upon receiving the emergency notification, the company’s DPA established a Contingency Response Room (CRR) and promptly mustered key staff. Remote access via Teams was utilized for staff who were not physically accessible. The exercise also aimed to test and study the mobilization of key staff and their ability to reach the office during an emergency when they are at home or traveling.
The situation escalated to include the collapse of an engine crew in the Engine Room Workshop, requiring emergency medical support and resulting in a fatality. CRR activities intensified in response to the evolving scenario. While the emergency was simulated, the company engaged external parties and conducted actual communications with the crewing agency "Barko International" and the port agent "Inchcape Shipping Services". Additionally, crews, who undergo pre-joining briefings at the office, participated in the exercise to physically experience our CRR activities during an emergency.
Once the desired goals were achieved, the exercise was concluded. Management's evaluation found the performance of all teams to be satisfactory. Identified best practices and opportunities for improvement (OFI) will be used to enhance our response activities.
Fuyo Kaiun is committed again to providing a safe workplace for all seafarers, and emergency response is considered a critical area of operation.
